Terrence Patrick O'Brien is a Professor of Ophthalmology and holder of the Charlotte Breyer Rodgers Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.  He is Director of the Cornea and Refractive Eye Surgery services at the campus of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in the Palm Beaches. Dr. O'Brien is an internationally recognized expert in corneal, anterior segment and refractive eye surgery, as well as in ocular infectious diseases. Dr. O'Brien graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan medical school and completed ophthalmology residency training at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in cornea and external diseases at the Cullen Eye Institute of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas prior to returning to Johns Hopkins as the Assistant Chief of Service at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. O’ Brien served on the full-time professorial faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for 15 years and was the inaugural Tom Clancy Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. O'Brien was recruited to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to join the distinguished faculty and to help build the campus of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in the Palm Beaches. An experience clinician, skilled surgeon, gifted educator and prolific scientific investigator, Professor O'Brien has an active clinical and surgical practice in cornea, anterior segment, refractive surgery and complicated intraocular lens surgery. He has been a leader in advancing newer technologies for advanced customized cataract surgery including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. He is a Senior Honor Achievement and Lifetime Honor awardee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and past Chairman and board member of the AAO's Refractive Surgery Interest Group and International Society of Refractive Surgery. He is Executive Vice President of the International Conference on Ocular Infections and the past President of the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group.
